What is a medical emergency?

A medical emergency is a sudden injury or serious illness that if not treated right away, could cause death or serious harm to you.  If you are pregnant it may mean harm to you or your unborn child.

An example of a life threatening emergencies could be the following:

  • Heart attack
  • Severe breathing problem
  • Severe bleeding
  • Stroke
  • Convulsions
  • Severe burns
  • Gunshot or knife wounds
  • Unconsciousness

If you can, call your Primary Care Provider.  If you cannot call, go to the nearest hospital emergency room or call 911 for emergency ambulance assistance.
