Continuity of care

Do you see a doctor who isn’t in the Aetna Better Health® of California network? In certain cases, you may be able to keep seeing them for up to 12 months. At the end of 12 months, if your doctor hasn’t joined our network, you’ll need to switch to a doctor in our network.

Doctors who leave our network

If your doctor stops working with us, you may be able to keep getting services from them. This is another form of continuity of care.

We provide continuity-of-care services if you:

  • Transition from Medi-Cal Fee-for-Service to Aetna Better Health
  • Transfer into Aetna Better Health during a member choice period or open enrollment
  • Transfer out of Aetna Better Health during a member choice period or open enrollment
  • Transfer within the Aetna Better Health network from one practitioner or provider to another (because of a change in a practitioner’s or provider’s contract status or location)

We also provide continuity-of-care services for some qualified groups, including:

  • State Children’s Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) members
  • Seniors and Persons with Disabilities (SPD)
  • Low-Income Health Program (LIHP) members

Do I qualify for continuity of care?

We only provide continuity-of-care services if:

  • You’re in a current course of treatment with a doctor who isn’t in our network
  • You’ve seen that out-of-network doctor at least once in the 12 months before your plan effective date

We’ll make sure that the care and services you need are available to you. We’ll also maintain your privacy. To learn more about continuity of care and find out if you’re eligible, you can call Member Services.
