How to use your member ID card
Your Aetna member ID card helps you use your health plan benefits. Learn what’s on it and when to use it.
When you join a health insurance plan, like Aetna Better Health, you get a member ID card. This card proves that you have insurance coverage. And it includes helpful info for you and your providers.
Your providers use the info on your ID card to confirm they’re in your plan’s network. They also use it to bill your plan for services.
Be sure to bring your ID card to:
- Provider visits
- Hospital or urgent care visits
- Pharmacies
- Other health care services
You’ll also want your ID handy during telehealth visits or when calling Member Services.
Where to find your ID card
You’ll get your ID card in the mail when your plan starts. You can also find your card anytime in your secure member portal or on the Aetna Better Health app. Visit the App Store or Google Play to download the app.
What to do if you lose your ID card
If your card is lost or damaged, you can get a new one at no cost. Remember, you can log in to your member portal to see or print your ID. You can also call Member Services to request a new card by mail.
What's on your ID card
You’ll find helpful info on the front and back of your card. Some details may vary by state and plan. Here are the basics:
Front-of-ID card details
- Member ID number: This number is unique to you. Health care providers use it to check coverage and submit claims. You may need this number when calling Member Services. And you may need it when using your member portal.
- Primary care provider (PCP): Many Medicaid members must have a primary care provider. Your PCP is the doctor you visit for routine care, checkups and referrals to specialists. If you don’t choose a PCP, we may assign one to you. Your PCP’s name is on your ID card. Check your card to make sure the name is correct. You can change your PCP at any time in your member portal. You can also call Member Services for help.
- Pharmacy (Rx) benefits: Some Medicaid plans include prescription drug coverage. If so, your card will show the info your pharmacy needs to fill your prescriptions.
Back-of-ID card details
The back of your ID card lists helpful phone numbers you may need, including:
- Member Services: Call with questions about your plan or benefits. They can also help you find care.
- 24-Hour Nurse Line: Have general health questions? Need help deciding where to go for care? Call this number any time to talk with a nurse.
- Behavioral health services: Call for help with mental health or substance use concerns. They can also help you find an in-network counselor, therapist or other mental health provider.
- Pharmacy help numbers: Call if you have questions about your prescription drug coverage. They can also help if you have issues filling a prescription at the pharmacy.
You may notice other info on your card beyond those we’ve covered. These may include prior authorization numbers or claim submission addresses. This info is for providers and other health care professionals.
Keep your ID card with you
This can make getting care a little easier. When your card arrives, check that your info is correct. That way, you’re ready when you need care.
