Providers can see your health info without delays

With our new Provider Access Application Programming Interface (API), your doctor or other providers who are actively treating you can see your health info through their electronic health record (EHR) or other approved systems. You’re in control. If you don’t want to share your health info this way, you can choose to stop at any time. Just use the ‘Current Data Access’ option.

What is the Provider Access API?

It’s a safe and secure connection that lets your provider view certain health info directly through their EHR or other approved systems. This means they can see key details about your health history without needing faxed forms or extra paperwork.

How provider access APIs benefit you

Sharing your health data helps your provider coordinate your care, move prior authorizations faster and make sure you get timely, effective treatment.

With this connection, your provider can:

  • See a more complete picture of your health
Including past diagnoses, procedures, lab results and other health info.

  • View claim and visit info
Sometimes the care you get may not show up in your provider’s system. The Provider Access API helps fill those gaps.

  • Coordinate your care more effectively
When your provider can see your full health history, it helps them understand your care, check on past treatments and see if you need any tests or services.

  • Reduce delays
Less time spent searching for health records or requesting documents means providers can make faster and more informed decisions about your care.

  • 1. Why should I share my health info with my provider?

Sharing your health info helps your doctor and other providers who care for you. They can coordinate your care, speed up prior authorization processes and make sure you receive timely, effective treatment.

    2. Who can see my health data?

We only share your data with in‑network providers who have a treatment relationship.

    3. Do I need to do anything to share my data?

No. You’re already opted in, so your health info automatically shares with your providers.

    4. Can I stop sharing my data?

Yes. You can opt out of data sharing with providers at any time and opt back in when you choose. If you opt out, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)  and state laws may still allow your provider to access certain health info they need for your treatment.

    5. Can I control who has access to my health care data?

Data sharing is all‑or‑none, meaning your data is shared with all eligible providers or with none. You can opt out whenever you choose.

    6. How do I opt out of sharing my data?

Go to the “Current Data Access” section on the Aetna® member website to opt out of API data sharing. You can stop sharing your data at any time.

    7. Can I opt back in after opting out?

Yes. You can opt back in to data sharing at any time.

To restart sharing, go to the “Current Data Access” section on the Aetna member website and follow the steps provided.

    8. If I opt out, will my provider still have access to any of my information?

Possibly. Even if you opt out of API data sharing, laws such as  HIPAA or state regulations may still allow your provider to request and receive certain health info they need to treat you.
