You trust that your provider, caregiver or loved one will take care of you. But sometimes, when someone helps take care of you, they can take advantage of you. It’s important to recognize the signs of abuse, neglect and exploitation. If this happens, you need to report it. This allows you to be safe and get the best care possible.

Abuse is when someone hurts you. Abuse can be mental, physical or sexual. It can also happen when someone tries to make you pay for services that you don’t need.

 

Neglect is when someone fails to get you the care and attention you need. 

 

Exploitation is when someone mishandles or withholds your money or services.

Tips for filing a report

When reporting abuse, neglect or exploitation, it is helpful to have the names, ages, addresses and phone numbers of everyone involved.

How to notice the signs

It can be hard to spot the signs and symptoms of abuse or neglect. These can also look like signs of:

 

  • Dementia 

  • A person’s frailty

  • Mental decline

  • Part of a disease 

  • Unexplained injuries

  • Broken bones

  • Medication issues

  • Refusal of visitors by a caregiver  

  • Control by the caregiver

  • Odd behavior

  • Bruises

  • Sexually transmitted diseases

  • Bleeding

  • Weight loss

  • Bedsores

  • Long fingernails or dirty fingernails (with feces)

  • Unsanitary living conditions 

  • Unsuitable or dirty clothing

  • Unsafe living conditions

  • Matted hair

  • Significant withdrawals

  • Sudden changes in finances

  • Missing items
