Special Needs Children

On February 1, 2020, the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services (HFS) moved all children with special needs into managed care. The HealthChoice of Illinois Special Needs Children (SNC) program helps ensure that the best health outcomes are achieved and care gaps are decreased for special needs children.

  • Children receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

  • Children enrolled in the Division of Specialized Care for Children (DSCC) Core Program

  • Children with a physical disability category

We’re committed to helping our members with special needs. That’s why we have: 

 

  • Put together a team of doctors who specialize in:

     

    • Physical health
    • Behavioral health
    • Social supports needed by children with special needs
  • Continued to work in partnership with the DSCC. We make sure that you get the right care for your child’s special health needs and goals.  

  • Created an extended provider network to help your child get the care they need.

Frequently asked questions

The only special needs children excluded from this transition are:

 

  • Medically Fragile/Technology Dependent waiver members

  • Children enrolled in the Nursing and Personal Care Services program

  • Children who also have third-party liability or commercial insurance

Special needs children will get all their Medicaid-covered services and medical care coordination from the health plan.

Yes. You can change your child’s PCP once a month. You can call Member Services to change your child’s PCP at 1-866-329-4701 (TTY: 711).

If you didn’t choose a health plan by the deadline listed in your enrollment letters, HFS chose a health plan and a PCP for you.

We’re committed to maintaining continuity of care for our members. And we understand that maintaining established relationships with treatment providers is important for staying healthy. Because of this, we have contracts with additional providers, just for the special needs population. If you need to confirm your provider’s network status, you can call Member Services at 1-866-329-4701 (TTY: 711).  

You should contact us as soon as possible. We’ll make sure to work toward a contract with the provider.
