Renewing your Medicaid or CHIP coverage

You’ll need to renew Your Texas Benefits every year, no matter which health plan you have:

  • STAR: Medicaid for kids, newborns, pregnant women and some families
  • STAR Kids: Medicaid for kids and adults ages 20 or younger who have disabilities
  • CHIP: coverage for families that earn too much money to use Medicaid, but can’t afford to buy private health insurance
  • CHIP Perinatal: coverage for mothers-to-be

Watch your mail

Look for a notice in the mail at least 60 days before you’ll need to renew. The notice will come from the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC). Be sure to know your renewal date. Your Texas Benefits could end if you don’t renew in time.

You can change your health plan

You can change your health plan at certain times:

  • Medicaid members: at any time
  • CHIP members: during the first 90 days of enrollment
  • CHIP Perinatal members: during the first 120 days of enrollment

Changes take from 15 to 45 days. You can join Aetna Better Health of Texas if you live in our service areas. If you would like to change your plan you can call the Texas Enrollment Broker Helpline at 800-964-2777 or log into the Your Texas Benefits account.

If you no longer qualify for Medicaid, you may be able to get coverage you can afford from through your employer or from other options, such as the Affordable Care Act (ACA) marketplace. You can enroll if you’ve had a qualifying life event like losing your coverage.

Learn about other coverage options:

  • Employer health plans: If you’re employed, you can ask your employer if they offer them for their employees. If they do, be sure to also ask for a breakdown of costs, so you can see if you can afford the coverage.
  • Visit Healthcare.gov to learn about other coverage options you may be eligible for.
